Chestnut Court: Located just off East Pleasant Street and less than one mile from the town center, Chestnut Court is comprised of five buildings for a total of 30 apartments Each of these one bedroom apartments has an individual outside entrance, and most are located on the ground floor. A community room and laundry facilities are available.



Ann Whalen: Ann Whalen Apartments, 33 Kellogg Avenue in downtown Amherst, next to the Senior Center, is a five-story elevator building containing 80 one-bedroom apartments, 4 of which are wheelchair accessible. The building includes a community room, laundry facilities and a greenhouse.



Jean Elder House: Jean Elder House is a former fraternity house with a community room and laundry facilities close to the center of town that has been converted into apartments for elderly and disabled people. There are three units: a one, a two and a three bedroom apartment, as well as three apartments that are rented to social service agencies whose clients have specific disabilities.



John Nutting: Next to Chestnut Court, John Nutting Apartments is a 5 unit program in 3 buildings for families who have a member with a mobility impairment. Each apartment is wheelchair accessible, has a roll-in shower and 3 or 4 bedrooms (one of which may be set aside for use by a live-in personal care attendant, if required). Laundry facilities are available.



Rent for these programs is figured annually on each tenant's or family's income after allowable deductions: 30% of the monthly income for elderly and disabled programs with all utilities included.

Scattered Site Housing: Funded by the State 705 Family Housing program, these twenty-two 2- or 3- bedroom apartments. (including one wheelchair accessible unit) are located in duplexes on 5 sites in the Town of Amherst. Each unit has laundry hook-ups and a storage shed. Tenants are responsible for utilities, snow removal and lawn mowing.



Rent for these programs is figured annually on each tenant's or family's income after allowable deductions: 27- 30% of monthly income for family programs with tenant-paid utilities.

Watson Farms: A 15-unit Federally funded program located at 693 Main Street, Watson Farms Apartments range from 1 to 4 bedrooms with 2 wheelchair accessible units. Each apartment has laundry hook-ups and a private fenced yard with a storage shed. These units are on a bus line and next to an elementary school. Tenants are responsible for their own utilities.

Tamarack Drive & 99 Bridge Street: Project based Section 8 funded units at these 2 addresses are eight 2- or 3- bedroom apartments (including one wheelchair accessible unit). Tenants are responsible for utilities, snow removal and lawn mowing.

683 & 687 Main Street: Section 8 funded project based units and HOME funded units at these two addresses; 11 unit total, 4 one bedroom units, 5 two bedroom units, and 2 three bedroom units. Tenants are responsible for utilities, laundry hookups and storage sheds are provided. Property is owned by Valley Main Street LLC and managed by the Amherst Housing Authority.



Rent for these programs is figured annually on each tenant's or family's income after allowable deductions: 30% of monthly income with tenant-paid utilities for the Section 8 project based units.

Section 8 Voucher Program:

The Amherst Housing Authority administers the federally funded Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. Participants in this program rent private apartments in the community and receive financial assistance from the Voucher Program to pay a portion of the rent. They may have to pay for some utilities. Citizenship status applies.

How to Apply

Applications and information about eligibility guidelines and waiting lists may be obtained from the Amherst Housing Authority at 33 Kellogg Avenue, Amherst, MA, or by calling 413-256-0206 x309. Please specify which program you are interested in, as applications differ for each. If you are disabled and need some assistance in completing applications for housing, or need some other accommodations in the application process, please tell us.

Rent is calculated at 30-40% of monthly income for the Section 8 Voucher Program.

Annual income is the sum of all income including wages, Social Security, pensions, interest and dividend payments, etc. Deductions such as medical and childcare expenses may be allowed.

MRVP (Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program)

The Amherst Housing Authority administers the state funded MRVP program. Participants in this program rent private apartments in the community and receive state financial assistance to pay a portion of the rent. Voucher holders may have to pay all or some of the utilities.
